Viñedos San Miguel and the majesty of Guanajuato’s terroir
There is a place where passion becomes a drink that delights the palate, a tangible dream rising majestically on the border between San Miguel de Allende and Comonfort, in Guanajuato: Viñedos San Miguel. This project, led by the young and capable vision of its general director, Jorge Solís, is not only a local pride but also a declaration of the region’s inexhaustible potential.
The vineyard stands out for housing the largest winery in all of central Mexico, an achievement that, according to Solís, is the materialization of a dream conceived with immense passion, much heart, and a profound love for wine. It is clear proof that in Guanajuato, things are done exceptionally well, with wine as a brilliant example that breaks paradigms.
The conversation with Jorge Solís revealed an exciting cultural evolution in Mexico. Although the country has traditionally leaned more toward beverages such as soda, beer, tequila, or mezcal, wine culture is flourishing. In the last decade, an interesting phenomenon has emerged: wine is gaining an important role in social gatherings. Mexicans are trading buckets of beer for a bottle of wine, a sign of maturity and appreciation for this healthy drink.
This cultural awakening goes hand in hand with the quality of national production. Viñedos San Miguel is no exception; its wines have been awarded worldwide and nationally. This excellence is no coincidence, as all production originates from the very soil of Comonfort. It is Guanajuato’s land, which Solís describes as blessed and full of properties, that gives rise to the magic and this unparalleled quality. The vineyard’s success firmly positions Comonfort and Guanajuato as distinguished territories in global wine production.
Viñedos San Miguel is an invitation to experience delight, to tour its facilities along the highway, and to witness how Mexican terroir, through passion and effort, becomes a product worthy of the highest international honors.
Full interview with Jorge Solís, general director of Viñedos San Miguel, by journalist Eugenio Amézquita Velasco
Eugenio Amézquita Velasco:
Here I am, as you can see, with the young general director of Viñedos San Miguel, Jorge Solís. Jorge, I want to thank you, because as you can see in this shot, I am at Viñedos San Miguel. I’m right on the edge, on the side of the San Miguel–Comonfort highway. First, congratulations, young man, but very capable. Right now, off-camera, amazing! Tell me, where are we? What is this? What are you doing here, and who can come if they wish?
Jorge Solís, General Director of Viñedos San Miguel:
Thank you, thank you, Eugenio, and welcome. Welcome here to Viñedos San Miguel, your home, everyone’s home. As you said, we are on the border of San Miguel with Comonfort, already on the Comonfort side. Well, it’s a majestic project. I believe it’s a project with incredible potential in every sense. We are here at the winery, which, as you said, can be seen from the highway, and it is the largest winery in central Mexico. We are very proud and happy to share this space with all of you. Truly, it is a dream born of great passion from its creators—much passion, much heart, and a great love for wine. From there comes this entire effort to make the project so large, so fruitful, and at the same time, as we mentioned earlier, it is already making noise and beginning to break paradigms. In the end, in Guanajuato we do things very well, and wine is no exception.
Eugenio Amézquita Velasco:
In a country like ours, where we are perhaps more into sodas, also water, beer, tequila, mezcal, wine culture hasn’t really taken root among Mexicans. But from your perspective, are you seeing that little by little space is opening up for Mexicans, like Europeans and North Americans, to consume wine—especially since it is a healthy drink?
Jorge Solís:
Of course, we have seen it, totally, over the years—and it hasn’t been that long—we have seen a very significant and beautiful evolution, especially for those of us who make wine. Something curious has happened in the market, because as you said, we are soda drinkers, beer drinkers, mezcal and tequila drinkers. Yes, yes, without a doubt. But an interesting phenomenon has occurred, at least over the last ten years: now, more frequently, you see people bringing a bottle of wine to their gatherings. There is a change happening—before, maybe you brought your bucket of beers or a case, which still happens, of course. But now you see many people saying, “I’m going to dinner, I’ll bring a bottle of wine.” The meaning is shifting, and wine is beginning to play an important role among people. We see this with great enthusiasm and joy, seeing that wine is truly positioning itself within Mexican palates.
Also, we are seeing how many brands, and as a country, we are offering excellent wine through different labels, and Viñedos San Miguel is certainly no exception. We are very happy to share that we have been awarded worldwide and nationally. So, in the end, I repeat, things are being done very well—in the state, in the country, and here in this house.
Eugenio Amézquita Velasco:
I think what you just said is important, because Mexico is being positioned as a country that produces good wine, and Guanajuato and Comonfort—Comonfort, of course—because those world awards, those international recognitions, reach all these levels, but it is Comonfort. Comonfort is producing very good wines, award-winning wines, and that is not something just anyone can boast about.
Jorge Solís:
That’s correct. And adding to your comment, it is really important to highlight that all the wines we use here in the winery are produced right here, at Viñedos San Miguel. Up there is the land, and from that land comes the excellent product—from Comonfort’s soil, from these Guanajuato lands that are truly blessed with many properties. That is where this quality originates, where the magic begins, and in the end, it becomes this great product that, without a doubt, is a delight.
Eugenio Amézquita Velasco:
Don’t go anywhere. What a beauty. I’m in San Miguel. This is wonderful. And we are here with Jorge Solís. We continue the tour here at Viñedos San Miguel in the municipality of Comonfort, on the border with San Miguel. I’m Eugenio Amézquita, and this is Guanajuato Desconocido.
