SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE.- San Miguel de Allende is preparing to host one of Mexico’s most emblematic cultural celebrations: the Day of the Dead. On October 30, 2025, at exactly 4:00 p.m., Escuela Secundaria General Fuego Nuevo will open its doors to the public for a festive day that blends memory, art, and tradition.
The event will begin with a parade of living catrinas and catrines, accompanied by a wind band, traveling through the streets of Moras, Prolongación Aldama, Baeza, Cardo, Salida a Celaya, and 5 de Mayo, returning to the school grounds. Inside the campus, visitors will find an exhibition of tombs and skulls, enjoy literary calaveritas, legends, and traditional verses, and walk through the symbolic Path of Mictlán, leading to the gateway of the Underworld.
The celebration will also feature an artistic display inspired by Diego Rivera’s “A Sunday Afternoon in the Alameda,” created by students, along with a traditional kermés organized by parents. As part of the tribute to cultural diversity, thirteen altars will be presented, each representing different regions and Indigenous communities, including Otomí, Purépecha, Yaqui, Yalalag, Teotitlán de Oaxaca, Cuetzalan, and San Andrés Chiapas, as well as an altar dedicated to the tomb of Cuauhtémoc.
One of the most anticipated moments will be the Ceremony of the Four Winds, performed by Ivon Martínez, a member of the Guamares Dance Group from Comonfort, Guanajuato. Music will also play a central role, with students dressed as catrines performing the songs “La Llorona” and “La Calaca,” accompanied by USAER students who will interpret the lyrics in Mexican Sign Language.
Felipe Bárcenas Hernández, director of Escuela Secundaria General Fuego Nuevo, emphasized that this celebration aims to strengthen students’ cultural identity and foster community engagement: “We want our traditions to be lived with respect, joy, and participation. This is an opportunity for families to reconnect with our roots and recognize the value of art and collective memory.”
The invitation is open to all of San Miguel de Allende. Tradition lives on, and this October 30 will be a vibrant testament to it. #MetroNewsMx #GuanajuatoDesconocido
